Lorenzo Fant

I am a physicist working at the intersection of statistical physics, theoretical ecology, and quantitative data analysis. Since 2024 I am a Researcher at the National Institute for Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS), Trieste, focusing on macroecology and modelling of marine ecosystems. Previously I was a PONTE Post-Doctoral Fellow at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Lisbon (2022–2024), working on community metabolic scaling and microbial functional ecology.

My research centres on identifying universal principles that organize ecological communities across scales of biological organization. Marine phytoplankton are my primary model system: tractable in the laboratory, globally important for primary production, and rich with macroecological patterns that demand mechanistic explanation. I also study how environmental fluctuations shape evolutionary strategies and life histories.
